Just take number of calories you want to eat for the day and divide it the way it is convenient to your lifestyle. What time you are eating doesn't make any difference, but total calories do. Eating more often and smaller amounts keep your body and brain from hunger and gives them feeling that even if they are getting hungry, something is coming soon.

For 1200 calories a day, I found ideal way for me is to keep my breakfast 200 cal (oatmeal porrige with diet hot chocolate mix). Cooked with water in microwave for cca 2 minutes and then add flavouring (could be cinnamon and sweetener also, or cut up apple). This keeps me from craving something sweet and comforting and sometimes I chose to have it for other meal when I feel like it.

For lunch I plan cca 300 calories and also 300 calories for dinner. I always seek vegetables I can cook and spice up like cabbage, eggplant etc. to bulk up my meals so I have plenty on my plate instead just bit of meat and carbohydrate.

That leaves me with 400 calories which I use for snacks. I love my snacks and cannot live without them so I always look for ideas to find some which are up to 100 calories of less. Without having selection of snacks in my fridge and freezer, I feel deprived and suffer and wish for cake, cookies or something I shouldn't have.

Sometimes when I am busy, I don't have time for any snacks during the day and I like that as I am "after dark" eater so on those days I have 4 snack during the long evening. I make sure that I have plenty in the fridge for late at night.

Anything jello-light based (with bit of fruit chopped in it), you can also add skim milk into jello after it cools with first cup of boiling water. OR Cut up apples, cook in microwave with cinnamon, add sweetener later, lemon juice to taste and you have another snack to put into your 1/2 cup containers (also good to eat/scratch frozen. During the year I cut up any seasonal fruit and stack up in my freezer for handy frozen treats. $ store 1/2 cup cups with lid are great for all above. I have always variety of these cups filled with "dessert" in the fridge and freezer. Any desert (like diet cheese cake someone posted recipe for) are great in those 1/2 cups with lids. I find these 1/2 cups great tool for keeping my portions small. On special occassions (company coming or birthday) when we have any other dessert I just calculate calories and put 100 or less calories into those cups for myself. It makes lots of portions for my future snacks and I don't miss anything because it is calculated into my 1200 cal/day.
